The Auburn University, College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for a Large Animal Field Service Rotating Internship with an Equine Emphasis. The goal of the internship is to further develop confidence and competence through hands-on experience and mentorship for those entering private practice or seeking further residency training. The intern is expected to play an integral part in patient management/treatment of field service and some inpatient cases. The intern will rotate through Equine Field Services with other equine rotations (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Theriogenology and Ophthalmology), food animal rotations, anesthesia, or radiology rotations depending on the interest of the individual. Fourteen days a month of on call emergency duty (overnights and weekends) under the guidance and supervision of the service senior clinician is part of this training program. The Equine Field Service is supported by 2 faculty members, Sarah Kooy DVM, MS and Alfredo Sanchez, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Large Animal), one customer service representative, and one intern.
Application process: The application deadline is April 15,2026. Applications should include a letter of intent, CV, and three letters of reference/recommendation. Letters of reference/recommendation must be emailed directly from the reference on professional letterhead to Dr. Alfredo Sanchez (azs0238@auburn.edu). All applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and have a passing score on the NAVLE by the time the program begins. The program dates are July 15, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Stipend for the Large Animal Field Service Rotating internship is $40,000.
Graduate school: All intern candidates must be able to meet entrance requirements for the AU Graduate School (the GRE requirement is waived) and must be enrolled in the AU Graduate School as a non-degree seeking graduate student. Because it is a non-degree seeking graduate program only US citizens or permanent residents can be hired and enrolled for this one-year program. All interns receive a tuition waiver for graduate coursework; however student services fees, graduate student health insurance, and parking permit are the responsibility of the intern. These fee/insurance costs are currently approximately $3500/year (paid in 3 payments- one each semester), but fees are set by the university and are subject to change. Official transcripts are required for application to the graduate school, which only occurs after acceptance into the internship program. Transcripts for ALL college coursework will be required.
Licensure: If a candidate is accepted into the internship program, all requirements must be met to hold and maintain a faculty license in the State of Alabama. State license fee is $250, which is initially paid by intern but will be reimbursed by Department of Clinical Sciences after hire.

Additional information: The Large Animal Field Service Rotating internship – Equine emphasis will be no more than one year in length. Membership in the AVMA is required to begin the internship to obtain professional liability insurance that is paid by the department. A DEA license is required after hire. USDA accreditation is not required. No contract, non-compete, or return of service agreements are required.
